Fashion Friday-Leprechaun or Irish Cutie?

Let's face it.  Too much of a good thing can be bad.  So can too much of one color.  I have to come to keep you from looking like a leprechaun next week!  Seriously, no one wants that look.  It's not flattering to look like a little bald man in a green suit.

1.  Use complimentary colors.  

      I love green with navy!  A good Kelly green looks pulled together when paired with navy.  Purple is another great choice.  Muted lime green seems more adult when paired with chocolate brown.  Deep greens like emerald will pop with tan or camel.

2. Use it small doses!

     That means add green accessories to compliment an outfit.  Scarves, necklaces, earrings, bracelets or shoes are easy to add.  Keep it to 3 pieces.  

3.  Go Big!

      Quite a contradiction to tip 2!  I have two pieces in my closet I love!!!  I found a great pair of skinny jeans that are an awesome green!  I also have a dress from a "pin up" online clothing shop that is a spectacular shade of green!  (I'm wearing it in my picture on the "About Me" page).  The key is I add a neutral color when I wear either item.  If you have colored jeans, pair them with a solid top like black, white, or denim.  You can't beat a good button up shirt. Add simple neutral flats and you will look adorable!

4.  Commitment Issues?

5.  Golden Girl.

      I'm not saying you should look like a pot of gold!  But accessorize with small amounts of gold.  A simple necklace looks flattering against a green top.  It makes both the necklace and the shirt pop without being overwhelming.

Fashion Friday-How to Wear Orange

OWith each season brings a set of colors that are associated with it.  I am not sure if we internally are inspired by certain colors each season or if the fashion magazines "implant" their thoughts into us overnight. I liike to think I resist "the powers that be" and wear what I want.  I also believe that each of us can "pull off" any color...we just need to find the right shade.  It's all about the shade you choose, how you wear it, what you accessorize with and MODERATION!

I like to wear or accessorize with orange during the fall months.  But how do you wear it WITHOUT looking like a pumpkin? I have come up with five different ways to wear this bright color without looking like you celebrate Halloween past October 31st.

1.  Pair with a neutral: I found an adorable sweater dress on clearance at Old Navy late last fall. I llike sweater dresses in the colder months because you throw on a pair of leggings and boots and BOOM!!  Looks like you spent all day getting "beautified".  Orange is a bold color, pairing it with a neutral "calms" down the color.  I like to pair orange with brown (especially after Halloween).  You can use dark browns, camel,  and even ivory. It also looks great with grey.  Don't forget navy and other blues!!  Blue is a great complimentary colors.  Navy can act as a neutral too!!

                     

    

2.  Denim and Orange are friends:  This is my new favorite look!  I have a denim shirt that I love!!  I found it at a J.Crew Outlet for more than 50% off!!  Again, throw on leggings, boots and this shirt with hints of orange for that cute, comfy, fall look.  Have a great orange sweater?  Layer it with the denim shrt!  Have a cute orange necklace that you are always unsure of?  Perfect outfit for it!  Scarrves, earrings, bracelets... the options are endless!  With the neutral background of the denim and brown leggings, I stay with the rule of 2-3 accessories or 1 big piece (like a sweater).

3.  LEOPARD!!: Hello, my name is Melissa and I have a leopard print problem.  I love to wear leopard with just about anything!!  I especially love it with a great fall orange!  It's unexpected.  Leopard is usually paired with hot pink, red, black or white. The orange gives a pop just as it does to the neutrals. Didn't you know that leopard is a neutral?!  I have a great orange sweater ( Old Navy find a couple of years ago) that I absolutely love!! I put it on with jeans and my leopard print boots.  If you have a great leopard scarf, that's perfect.  With the orange, I usually keep my leopard to small piece like a scarf or shoes.

4.   Accessories:  This might be the second easiest way to wear orange. Maybe you are still on the fence about our citrus colored friend.  Accessories are an easy to build up your courage.  Earrings, bracelets, scarves, necklaces, shoes and purses are all simple ways to get your foot in the door...the orange door than is.

5.  Nail Polish:  This is the EASIEST!!  Especially if you are indecisive, hestitant or have commitment issues.  You can play with all different shades at once if you like. I prefer the darker oranges and not the neon hues for fall. If you are one of those people that has to have an accent nail (that means not all of your nails are the same color), have fun exploring different color combos that way!!  You can do orange with dark purple, brown, tan, navy, aqua, gold, blue...I think I have even used a cranberry color with it.  It was like having cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie on my nails!

Fashion Friday-Going out to Dinner!!

Today's Fashion Friday is brought to you by my momma's birthday!!
We are going out to dinner at a local steakhouse (cause that's what we country people call them).  They have two rules: No T-Shirts and NO FLIP FLOPS are allowed!  WHAT??!!  So that means I have to dig deeper into the closet!  Usually when I do that, I also feel the need to make new jewelry to go with said 'fancy' outfit.  Typical spring foot attire for me is flips flops or converse sneakers.  But flip flops are frowned upon and converse are just not fancy enough.  There, sitting in my closet all the way at the back, are my favorite cowboy boots!  Problem solved!

We are half way through the blog and I forgot to mention the maxi skirt that I made with the intention of wearing tonight.  I used some of my favorite fabric last night and whipped that baby out in less than 30 minutes (with semi straight stitches; I had a glass of wine while sewing).  I was so proud of myself!  I went to try it on and ...my butt apparently grew 3 sizes in that 30 minutes it took me to sew that skirt!  Pretty sure I heard  threads popping out of their seams!  SERIOUSLY!

This would be the event that put me in  the back of the closet (with a box of cookies) to look for an outfit.  I paired some new earrings (made by me) and my Shiner cuff (that continues to be a work in progress) with a dressy black top and a good pair of jeans.

Fashion Friday-Design an outfit around a purse!

You made it to Friday.  Not just any Friday... Good Friday.  So most of you have a 3 day weekend.  But it's also Fashion Friday.  That means I design an entire outift around one piece.  This week I chose the clutch because it is so cute!  It was pretty easy considering I am wearing most of this outfit today:)

I paired my red skinny  jeans with a navy tank...pretty easy, right?  I added my favorite LSG necklace and the Shiner beer cap bracelet.  If you get a little chilly, you can always add a jean jacket or denim shirt.  If you remember my favorite leopard slip ons from a couple of weeks ago, that's what is on my feet.  You are ready for the day, looking super cute with not a lot of effort! Get ready to hear, "Oh my!  You look so cute!"

Fashion Friday-Baseball Moms!!!

Since Pistol plays baseball tonight, I decided I needed a cute baseball mom outfit-especially since it's warm today!  I have tons of shirts I have bought that I usually wear, but today I decided to go for my own custom gear.  First off, I love the look of maxi skirts.  But I am only 5 foot 4 so most of the time the maxi is way too long!  I had sworn off the maxi skirt/dress of any kind.  Then I found this tutorial on Pinterest and thought I could totally do this!  And guess what this NOVICE seamstress did??  TOTALLY ROCKED IT!!    DIY Maxi Skirt with Slit has easy directions with PICTURES!!!  I made mine with a grey cotton knit.  I will say that is not the easiest fabric to work with.  Plus I had never worked with elastic before.  So after having several disagreements with my machine, I finally got a super cute (and comfy) grey maxi skirt that is custom made to my measurements.  After I got the hard part out of the way, I made my tank with cute baseball fabric and whipped up a baseball mom necklace.  I like the small necklaces for baseball games because when I get hot and sunburnt (let's be honest: I am a ginger, I am going to burn), the lines aren't as noticeable.  Once I got my shirt and necklace done, I added my favorite flip flops in our team color.  I will try to add a picture to my Facebook of the skirt on once the hubby gets home.  Swing batter swing!!!
